Podcast #003: Multipass Lighting
Podcast #003: Multipass Lighting is now online!
If you’re wanting to see a more in-depth image of the compositing tree, below is a screen shot of the comp in Combustion. Beware… it’s a pretty huge jpeg.

Hi watching and enjoying it. Love the breakdowns. Can’t wait to see more.

Excellent short on multi-pass compositing. Very informative for just a few minutes. Plus, I picked up a couple of techniques as well. I am definitely looking forward to seeing the progress and completion of “Pigeon: Impossible”. It looks like fun, too.

Excellent podcast. Very short and simple but packed with helpful info. Can’t wait to see more. It would be cool to see the actual light setups you used for each pass, similar to how you showed the “haystack.” Great stuff, looking forward to the next one.

Thanks guys! Yeah I’m intentionally trying to keep them as short as possible. I’m glad to hear that people seem to like them that way.
Font, The next episode is actually specifically focused on lighting rigs so stay tuned! However, it’s nothing more than 3-point lighting so I hope you’re not disappointed.
The episode is actually going to deal with how to reuse that same rig and set up the passes automatically.

Although informative, very boring. Where is the Martell sarcas, spunk, sparatic Colbert Report camera angles. If your intention was to feel like a high school teacher. Success!!
You are trying to make people like you and your blog. Eye on the Prize. My suggestions A re-edit with a clip of self made music video to the Tubes, She’s a Beauty at the end.

We can work hard, but can we still play hard?

My brother Jake brings up a good point. I’ll try to keep the podcasts as entertaining as possible, as long as it doesn’t sacrifice content or add a lot of running time.
However, I must adamantly disagree about the Tubes suggestion. How could I possibly compete with this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVm3SmyMkFU

You guys are awsome. I’ve learned a lot from watching your tutorials on lighting. It’s like seeing a mini-pixar production first hand.

You apply depth blur using a Z depth pass but I could never get that to work properly. Like it will blur correctly in terms of where sould be in focus and where shouldnt but then you have sharp corners between the areas that are blurry and the areas that are in focus I know you’re using Combustion, I have cimbustion but I’m using Fusion/Toxik is there anyway to get it looking correct in there?
Like I’ve just found interesting way to get around it but I’d like to do it the right way.

I have that problem as well. Fortunately since the characters and BGs are on separate layers, there’s no haloing around the edges, just on BG edges. I’ve heard that the pixel coverage channel can be used by some of the newer compositors to alleviate that.

Hmm I’ll do some research on that I see what’s going one, thanks alot man.
